Barbara O’Neill has dedicated her life to improving other people’s health. Water is vital to maintain life but many of us are not properly hydrated. The health guru teaches how we can properly hydrate our bodies - but how exactly?
Start Filtering Your Water
The first thing that Barbara O’Neill suggests when it comes to hydration is making sure your water source is clean. She says: “Make sure you’re drinking pure water.” Tap water is not a clean water source. Studies around the world have found tap water contains contaminants such as fluoride, chlorine, microplastics, heavy metals and even pharmaceuticals which water processing plants struggle to remove from our drinking water. On the other hand, water in plastic bottles contains a high concentration of microplastics so this isn’t a pure source either.
Barbara O’Neill recommends investing in a reverse osmosis machine. The health aficionado states: “How do you purify your water? A reverse osmosis is one process that will get the fluoride out.”
Reverse osmosis machines filter out the vast majority of contaminants from your tap water. They can remove fluoride, chlorine, microplastics, heavy metals and pharmaceuticals.

She continues: “It’s the fluoride that’s the hardest to get out. Fluoride in water is toxic and it only hardens the outside of the teeth. Why do we have to drink it and why do we have to bathe in it? It defies reason.”
Studies have found that excessive fluoride consumption lowers our IQ and O’Neill believes it is a toxin that can cause other health problems. She believes it can be more damaging than drinking rainwater of water out of a dam.
Barbara O’Neill says: “If you drink rainwater or dam water and you’ve got strong hydrochloric acid that actually wipes it out…but I think the body can cope better with microbes in water than it can cope with fluoride or ammonia or chlorine in water.”
Now you have a clean and pure source of water, what is the next step in making sure you are fuelling your body’s cells with the highest quality water and properly hydrating yourself?
Barbara O’Neill on Celtic Sea Salt
Celtic Sea Salt is a hand-harvested sea salt from the Celtic Sea. It contains 82 minerals that are good for the human body. Barbara O’Neill states that the minerals found in this particular type of salt align perfectly with the minerals found in our bodies. She says: “Seawater contains 92 minerals - the exact same minerals and proportion and balance as found in the human body and the closest to seawater is Celtic Salt. Celtic Sea Salt has 82 minerals.”
The health expert believes you can optimize hydration by putting a crystal of Celtic Sea Salt on your tongue before drinking a glass of water and letting it dissolve in your mouth. She states: “It is far better to put it on your tongue and then drink it rather than put it in your water. Because of the three types of magnesium in the water it dissolves into the water so you don’t quite get the same effect.”
How does Celtic Sea Salt help to hydrate our bodies? By putting a crystal of this type of salt on your tongue before drinking water, it actually helps to pull the water inside your cells.
Barbara O’Neill explains the process in more detail:
“When you put a crystal of Celtic Salt on your tongue and then drink a glass of water. When the crystal is on your tongue, even for a few seconds, then the mucous membranes in the mouth are absorbing, first of all the magnesium - remember it’s a water hungry molecule. And that magnesium is taken via the blood straight to the cell and pulls the water inside the cell. It is the quickest way to hydrate the body. Put that crystal of Celtic Salt on your tongue, take that glass of water and it ensures that the water is pulled inside the cell.”
We lose important minerals naturally throughout the day. The 82 minerals found in Celtic Sea Salt help to replace these lost minerals. Barbara O’Neill says: “All your doing is replacing the minerals you lost yesterday. We lose minerals when we perspire, we lose some minerals when we urinate. We’re losing minerals, we need to replace them.”
How often should we consume Celtic Sea Salt? The health expert says: “I suggest that we do it at least once or twice a day” and she says: “How big is the crystal of Celtic salt? Probably about the size of a sesame seed. If someone’s not used to that I’d probably advise even less than that to get their body used to it.”
